New Delhi, March 2: Following the government’s intervention and the convening of a meeting to resolve the matter, tech giant Google has restored some of the Indian apps that it had removed from its Play Store.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the government firmly opposes Google’s decision to remove certain apps from its platform.

“Government takes strong view of Google delisting some apps from Play Store. We will not allow delisting of apps,” he stated.

Google has restored several of Info Edge India’s popular apps, including Naukri, 99acres, and Naukri Gulf, in response to the intervention. Following the government’s involvement, People Group’s matrimonial app Shaadi was also restored on the Play Store on Saturday afternoon.

Govt’s intervention prompts relief for companies as Google faces criticism over App delisting

Although it’s unclear if Google would reinstate the remaining delisted apps, the impacted companies are pleased with the government’s intervention.

The tech giant received harsh criticism on social media, with some criticizing the corporation for its monopolistic activities. This led to the government opposing Google’s decision.

Furthermore, the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), an industry organization, denounced Google’s decision and called for the reinstatement of the removed apps.

“IAMAI strongly condemns the removal of some of the most prominent consumer digital companies’ apps from the Play Store, including those of Bharatmatrimony, Info Edge, Shaadi.com, and TrulyMadly and IAMAI urges Google to reinstate the delisted apps,” IAMAI had stated.

Notably, Google stated it removed these apps due to disagreements over in-app transaction fees. The impacted companies opposed Google’s proposal to impose charges ranging from 11% to 26%.
