Jamshedpur, March 2: Tata Steel today dedicated a Geological Centre named after pioneering geologist P N Bose, on the eve of the 185th Birth Anniversary of its founder Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata.

The Centre, one of its kind, was inaugurated by T V Narendran, CEO and managing director, Tata Steel.

This Centre has been set up as a specialised geological hub, recognizing the immense importance of preserving and exhibiting the geological riches of the nation, particularly in Odisha and Jharkhand.

The Centre offers a unique opportunity to explore the intricate layers of our planet’s history, serving as a platform for understanding the formation of rocks, minerals, fossils, and the dynamic processes that have shaped Earth over millions of years.

It also serves as a platform to document the history of mining at Tata Steel and honour the contributions of numerous renowned geologists, mining experts, and process engineers.

While Tata Steel is primarily known as a steel manufacturing company, it is worth noting that it is also one of the largest mining companies in the country.

The Centre highlights the presence of ores and minerals, with a focus on minerals essential for steel production, the geology of the Singhbhum-Odisha region, a tribute to P N Bose’s life and work, and dedicated exhibits on Tata Steel’s iron ore, manganese, coal, and chromite mines.

The centre was conceptualised by Tridibesh Mukherjee, former Deputy Managing Director (Steel), Tata Steel, who graciously donated mineral samples from his personal collection to the Centre.

Moreover, the collection at the Centre has been enhanced with rocks and mineral samples generously provided by the family of the legendary Late Dr J J Irani, former managing director, Tata Steel.

Inauguration of i-MEC and i-CPROC

Narendran also inaugurated the i-MEC (Integrated Maintenance Excellence Centre) and i-CPROC (Integrated Coke Plant Remote Operations Centre) at Tata Steel Jamshedpur Works.

Both the centres are a testament to Tata Steel’s commitment towards digitalisation with improvement in IT infrastructure for the establishment of an integrated command centre for better monitoring and surveillance.
