New Delhi, March 11: Five years after it was approved by Parliament, the Centre put the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) into effect on Monday. The issuance of the notification comes before the Election Commission of India’s finalization of the Lok Sabha election dates.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated last month that with the release of the relevant regulations, the CAA will be put into effect prior to this year’s Lok Sabha elections.
After being passed by Parliament on December 11, 2019, the CAA has generated a great deal of debate and widespread opposition throughout India.

The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) modifies the Citizenship Act of 1955, offering an expedited route to Indian citizenship for migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, specifically those belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Parsi, Buddhist, and Christian communities. This provision applies to individuals who entered India on or before December 31, 2014, as a result of experiencing religious persecution in their countries of origin.
Rules for implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) have been notified by the Union Home Ministry.
According to an official, the MHA announcement can be used to implement the CAA law, making it possible for qualified individuals to become citizens of India.
“The regulations are prepared, and an online portal is already set up for the entire process, which will be conducted digitally. Applicants will need to disclose the year of their entry into India without any travel documents. No additional documentation will be required from the applicants,” the official said.
