Ranchi, April 10: In a double murder case, the Special MP/MLA court in Ranchi today sentenced extremist Jaitha Kachhap and former JMM MLA Paulus Surin to life imprisonment.

The case was filed on May 25, 2013, at the Karra police station in the Khunti district of Jharkhand. Before entering the political sphere, Surin also had affiliation to the Naxals.

On April 7, Surin and Kacchap were found guilty and convicted by Additional Judicial Commissioner Dinesh Kumar’s court under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 27 of the Arms Act.

On April 10, the same court sentenced the accused Surin and Kacchap to life in prison.

The court scheduled arguments regarding sentencing for April 10, coinciding with the public announcement of its judgment.

What’s the double murder case?

According to records, social worker Bhushan Kumar Singh and Ram Govind were playing cards near Singh’s residence on a summer afternoon in 2013 when Naxals approached and began firing indiscriminately, resulting in their fatalities.

According to the police chart sheet, Paulus Surin accused Singh of being a “police informer” and advised him to refrain from engaging in such actions.

Before being sent to the special MP/MLA court, the matter had been heard in a Khunti court for around three years.

Surin had been the elected member for the Torpa ST Reserve Assembly constituency in Jharkhand. The prosecution presented testimony from 12 witnesses to support the case against Surin and Kacchap.

Out of the six accused, four individuals, including three women, were acquitted due to insufficient evidence.
