Toronto, April 22: After a thrilling final round in Toronto, India’s 17-year-old chess prodigy D Gukesh made history on Monday by winning the FIDE Candidates Chess Tournament 2024.

This win makes the 17-year-old the youngest-ever challenger to the world title. He will face China’s Ding Liren in the World Championship final.

In the tournament aimed at determining the challenger to the world champion, Gukesh settled for a simple draw against American player Hikaru Nakamura in the 14th and concluding round, ending with a total of nine points out of a possible 14.

“So relieved and so happy. I was following this crazy game (between Fabio Caruana and Ian Nepomniachtchi), and then I went for a walk with my second (Gregorz Gazevsky), I think that helped,” remarked Gukesh after his victory.

Gukesh was also awarded a cash prize of approximately Rs 78.5 lakh (88,500 Euros). The overall prize pool for the Candidates tournament amounted to 5,00,000 Euros.

He is only the second Indian, following the legendary Viswanathan Anand, to claim victory in the prestigious tournament. Anand, a five-time world champion, achieved this feat in 2014.
