Dhanbad, June 5: The Jharkhand Health Service Association (JHSA), the frontal organization of state government medical officers, has opposed the extension of the retirement age of doctors after 67 years.

JHSA president Dr PP Shah and secretary Dr Thakur Mritunjay Kumar Singh, in a letter to the state government, have said that rather than enhancing the retirement age of doctors from 67 years of age, it should appoint young doctors to vacant posts in the health department.

JHSA members are of the view that doctors should be given the option of whether he/ she is interested in continuing service or not.  The retirement age of interested doctors should be extended after 67 years. But, at the same time, it should not be made mandatory for a doctor who is not interested.

They have urged the state government to enhance the retirement age of dental doctors from 65 to 67 at par with the health department cadre.

Teachers of medical colleges

Teachers of medical colleges in the state also retire at the age of 67 years and are given a two-year contractual service offer. If the principal considers his/her service satisfactory, a contractual teacher is given a year’s extension (till 70 years). But medical education wing doctors also do not want an extension of the retirement age.

A JHSA official said that doctors too are human beings and want to lead post-retirement lives with family members which they miss a major part of life. “Post-retirement life is a different life.  I feel the joy we enjoyed when my Papa retired.   We want to give the same joy to our family members when they retire from their jobs,” said the JHSA official.

Protest over action against eye specialists

The JHSA state president and secretary have reiterated their protest against action against eye specialists based on a controversial notification of the department and demanded immediate discharging them from alleged allegations and the lifting of the ban on five increments.
