Sikhs demand justice for Bokaro victims of 1984 riots

THE JHARKHAND STORY NETWORK

Jamshedpur, Nov 14: In a significant development towards seeking justice for the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Bokaro, Satnam Singh Gambhir, the East India President of All India Sikh Students Federation, expressed a firm commitment to ensuring justice for the affected families. Bokaro’s dedicated social worker, Jasmeet Singh Soddi, brought forth the demands of the victims’ families in a memorandum submitted to Gambhir at his office in Sakchi, Jamshedpur.

The memorandum highlighted a concerning issue: the recently issued compensation list covers only 24 victim families from the 1984 massacre, leaving many deserving families unaccounted for. In response, Satnam Singh Gambhir assured Soddi that he would personally meet DP Singh, the One Man Commission investigating the 1984 riots, to apprise him of the situation and demand compensation for the overlooked victim families.

During the meeting, Gambhir expressed his concern about the health of DP Singh, stating that once he recovers, he plans to visit Singh’s Ranchi residence to discuss the ongoing struggle for justice and compensation. Gambhir emphasized that his dedication to the cause will persist until every victim’s family receives the justice they deserve.

It is noteworthy that Satnam Singh Gambhir’s relentless efforts led to the filing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Jharkhand High Court, prompting the Jharkhand government to establish a One Man Commission dedicated to investigating the 1984 riots. The recent developments indicate a continued commitment to the pursuit of justice for the affected families and a hopeful resolution to their long-standing grievances.
