Assam flood situation escalates, 16.5 lakh affected in 29 districts

Guwahati, July 4: The flood situation in Assam is continuously deteriorating. On Thursday, the major rivers in the state were flowing above the danger level, according to an official bulletin.

The bulletin reports that over 16.5 lakh people are affected by the floods across 29 districts in the state. The Brahmaputra, Digaru, and Kolong rivers are all flowing above the danger mark. Meanwhile, an alert has been issued in Kamrup (Metro) district.

CM held meeting with all DCs on flood situation

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will visit the flood-affected areas of Maligaon, Pandu Port and Mandir Ghat in Guwahati on Thursday.

Himanta chaired a meeting on the flood situation with all the district commissioners (DCs) late on Wednesday night. During this, he directed the concerned officials to provide relief to the flood-affected people as soon as possible.

He also asked the officials to complete all the rehabilitation claims as per the norms before August 15 and provide accurate information to the headquarters so that adequate relief can be given to the people.

Assam cabinet ministers to visit flood-affected districts for three days

Cabinet ministers of the Assam government will also visit the flood-affected districts for the next three days from Thursday and take stock of the situation.

The death toll due to floods, landslides and storms in Assam this year has risen to 56 and three others are missing.

Barpeta, Vishwanath, Cachar, Charaideo, Chirang, Darang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup Metropolitan, Karbi Anglong, Karimganj, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Shivsagar, Sonitpur districts are affected due to floods.

Dhubri is the most affected district

Due to the ongoing flood crisis in Assam, Dhubri has the highest number of affected people at 2.23 lakh, followed by Darang with about 1.84 lakh people and Lakhimpur with more than 1.66 lakh people stranded in flood waters.

The Brahmaputra river is flowing above the danger mark in Nimatighat, Tezpur, Guwahati, Goalpara and Dhubri.
