Noida, July 6: Officials stated on Saturday that Devprakash Madhukar, the key accused in the July 2 Hathras stampede which left 121 people dead, was arrested by a Special Operations Group of Hathras police from Delhi’s Najafgarh area.
Hathras Superintendent of Police Nipun Agarwal said that Madhukar, who was arrested late Friday night, had been contacted by several political parties recently.
Madhukar, who was a fundraiser for the self-styled godman Surajpal, also known as Narayan Sakar Hari or Bhole Baba, collected donations for his events, and the police will be applying for his remand, said Agarwal.

“His financial transactions, money trails are being looked into, and call detail records also being checked,” Hathras SP Agarwal further stated.
On the other hand, A.P. Singh, Madhukar’s lawyer, claimed on Friday night that Madhukar had surrendered to the Delhi police while in the city for medical treatment.
The police brought Madhukar to Bagla Combined District Hospital in Hathras for a medical examination around 2:15 p.m. on Saturday, with extensive security measures in place.
The FIR registered at Sikandra Rao police station in Hathras names Madhukar, the ‘mukhya sevadar’ of the ‘satsang’ where the stampede occurred, as the sole accused in the case.
