New Delhi, July 26: The Moidams which is the mound burial system of the Ahom dynasty in Assam, was officially included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in the Cultural Property category on Friday.

The decision was made during the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee (WHC), which is currently taking place in Delhi.

The ‘Moidams’ were put forward as India’s nomination for the UNESCO World Heritage List for the year 2023-24.

What are Moidams?

The Moidams are burial mounds for the Ahom kings, queens, and nobles. The term “Moidam” comes from the Tai words “Phrang-Mai-Dam” or “Mai-Tam.” “Phrang-Mai” means to bury or place in a grave, while “Dam” refers to the spirit of the deceased.

Moidams are present in all the districts of upper Assam, but Charaideo, the first capital of the Ahoms, served as the primary necropolis for almost all Ahom royals. Located 28 km east of Sivasagar, Charaideo is where the first Ahom king, Chau-lung Siu-ka-pha, was buried after his death, following all the Tai-Ahom religious rites and rituals.
