New Delhi, July 29: In the Lok Sabha on Monday, MPs from various parties raised the issue of the death of three students due to waterlogging in the basement of a coaching institute in the capital. They demanded a thorough investigation into the matter and strict action against the responsible officials from the central government.

Three students preparing for the civil services exam died after heavy rain on Saturday caused water to flood the basement of a coaching centre in the Old Rajendra Nagar area of Delhi. The police identified the deceased students as Shreya Yadav from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh; Tanya Soni from Telangana; and Naveen Dalvin from Ernakulam, Kerala.

Members of Lok Sabha also held the Delhi government, led by the Aam Aadmi Party, accountable for the alleged lack of drainage maintenance and violations of construction and safety standards.

Swaraj holds Delhi govt responsible of criminal negligence

During Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha, BJP MP from New Delhi constituency, Bansuri Swaraj, attributed the deaths of the students, who drowned in the waterlogged basement of the coaching institute, to the Delhi Aam Aadmi Party government.

She said that the students lost their lives due to the criminal negligence of the Delhi government. She alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party has been in power in Delhi for a decade but has not done anything for the residents of the city.

Swaraj also mentioned that the Delhi Municipal Corporation and Delhi Jal Board are under the control of the Delhi government, yet the drainage systems in the capital have not been cleaned.

She requested the Ministry of Home Affairs to form a committee to investigate the matter.

Tharoor, Pappu Yadav, Akhilesh, Eden demand action

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor stated that while it is expected that the families of the deceased students receive compensation, financial aid alone is insufficient. He also raised the issue of alleged violations of basic construction regulations and fire safety standards, urging the government to conduct a comprehensive investigation to prevent such incidents in the future.

Independent MP from Purnia in Bihar Rajesh Ranjan, also known as Pappu Yadav, accused the government of not setting standards for coaching institutions in the country and demanded an investigation into the incident.

Samajwadi Party’s Akhilesh Yadav described the incident as tragic and stated that action should be taken against the responsible officials. He said that the Uttar Pradesh government runs bulldozers on the responsible people in such cases and the government should tell whether bulldozers will be run here as well.

Congress’s Hibi Eden said that the management of coaching institutes and the responsible officials of the Delhi Municipal Corporation should be charged with culpable homicide in the case of student deaths.
