THE JHARKHAND STORY DESK

Kolkata, August 28: In West Bengal, life was disrupted in several areas on Wednesday due to a 12-hour bandh called by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in protest against the police action against protesters during a march to the state secretariat.

Reports indicate that there was firing on the vehicle of BJP’s local leader Priyangu Pandey in Bhatar.

Due to the BJP’s 12-hour bandh in Bengal, drivers in Howrah were seen wearing helmets, citing safety reasons.

Several BJP leaders and activists have been detained, including Locket Chatterjee and Rupa Ganguly.

BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has alleged that TMC goons fired at the vehicle of a BJP leader, injuring the driver.

Several people injured in sporadic violence

The police used batons and fired tear gas shells in Hooghly, resulting in several injuries. Many activists have also been detained.

Suvendu Adhikari said that Mamata Banerjee and the TMC are trying to remove the BJP from the streets. He claimed that the bandh has been successful and has been warmly welcomed by the people. He added that the toxic combination of the police and TMC will no longer intimidate the BJP.

Reports of arson have emerged from areas including Hematabad. Several people have been injured in sporadic violence and have been admitted to the hospital.

Public transport services affected due to rail and road blockages

Since the morning, public transportation services have been disrupted in several areas of the state due to rail and road blockades, causing inconvenience to people.

In the capital, Kolkata, there is less activity on the streets. There are very few buses, auto-rickshaws, and taxis visible, and the number of private vehicles is also low. However, markets and shops remain open as usual. Schools and colleges are open, but attendance at most private offices is very low as employees have been instructed to work from home.

The police took action and dispersed the crowd. BJP workers clashed with the police while trying to block a main road in Alipurduar.
