Dhanbad, September 11: The IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Akron (USA) to enhance academic collaboration and drive innovation in both conventional and advanced manufacturing engineering.

In a virtual ceremony, representatives from IIT ISM—including Prof. Sagar Pal, Prof. Rammadho Bhattacharya, Prof. Amit Rai Dixit, Prof. Tanmay Maity, and Prof. Gauri Shankar—signed the MoU alongside the University of Akron representatives Prof. Ajay Mahajan, Prof. Craig Menzemer, Dr. Tanmay Tiwai, and Laura Fisher.

An official from IIT ISM remarked that the collaboration will unite expertise from both institutions to advance research and innovation in cutting-edge areas of manufacturing and engineering.

“Both institutions will collaborate on projects focusing on modernising traditional manufacturing processes and integrating them with advanced technologies to increase efficiency and precision,” the official stated.

Precision and surface finishing engineering

The partnership aims to foster innovation in precision and surface finishing engineering, including the design and development of high-accuracy components and systems crucial for various industries.

As part of the MoU, a Centre for Precision Engineering will be established at IIT ISM Dhanbad, while a similar facility will be set up at the University of Akron.

The MoU emphasises the role of automation, smart factories, and data-driven manufacturing, facilitating joint research on Industry 4.0 technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Robotics.

Joint PhD programmes

The agreement also includes launching joint PhD programmes, allowing students to conduct research across both institutions. This initiative aims to create a global platform for aspiring researchers to work on industry-relevant projects under the guidance of world-class faculty from IIT ISM and the University of Akron.

Faculty exchange programmes will play a significant role in this collaboration, promoting knowledge transfer and expertise in advanced materials, engineering design, and smart manufacturing solutions.

Research projects and student exchange

The MoU will enable collaborative research projects focusing on conventional manufacturing process automation, surface engineering, AI and machine learning in manufacturing, and digital twin technology.

Students from both universities will have opportunities to participate in exchange programs, gaining exposure to diverse research environments, industry practices, and technological advancements.
