Stockholm, Oct 9: The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced on Wednesday that the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to David Baker, Demis Hassabis, and John M. Jumper.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has declared that the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry will be split into two parts: one half awarded to David Baker for his research in computational protein design, and the other half jointly given to Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper for their contributions to protein structure prediction.

“The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2024 is about proteins, life’s ingenious chemical tools. David Baker has succeeded with the almost impossible feat of building entirely new kinds of proteins. Demis Hassabis and John Jumper have developed an AI model to solve a 50-year-old problem: predicting proteins’ complex structures. These discoveries hold enormous potential”, the Nobel Prize press release stated.
According to Nobel Prize’s official website, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded 116 times to 197 Nobel Prize laureates between 1901 and 2024. Frederick Sanger and Barry Sharpless have both been awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry twice. This means that a total of 195 individuals have received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
