New Delhi, Oct 9: A meeting of the Union Cabinet was held on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Several important decisions were approved during the meeting, including the extension of the time limit for providing free grain to the poor.

After the Cabinet meeting, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the Cabinet has decided that free grain will continue to be provided to the poor until December 2028.

Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the Cabinet has approved the continuation of free fortified rice distribution under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKAY) and other welfare schemes from July 2024 to December 2028.

He said it is expected that this will help address anaemia and micronutrient deficiencies. The total financial burden will be ₹17,082 crore, which will be borne by the central government.

National Maritime Heritage Complex to be developed in Gujarat’s Lothal

He informed that the Cabinet has decided to develop a National Maritime Heritage Complex in Lothal, Gujarat. The aim of the proposal is to showcase the rich and diverse maritime heritage and to create the world’s largest maritime heritage complex.

While briefing about the Cabinet meeting, Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that PM Modi has emphasized infrastructure development in border areas. Today, the Cabinet approved the construction of 2,280 kilometres of roads in the border areas of Rajasthan and Punjab with an investment of ₹4,406 crore.

Earlier on October 3, several important decisions were approved during the Central Cabinet meeting. In the meeting chaired by PM Modi, the PM National Agricultural Development Scheme and the Agricultural Advancement Scheme were approved. Additionally, the National Mission on Edible Oils was also given approval. The government had also decided to grant classical language status to five languages.
