Experts discuss advanced concepts in biophysics at IIT ISM Dhanbad

Dhanbad, Oct 19: A discussion on advanced concepts in Biophysics and Soft Matter commenced at IIT ISM on Saturday, featuring expert faculty members from across the country. This discussion is part of a two-week refresher course aimed at enhancing knowledge in these fields.

Prof. Yashwant Singh, a former professor and head of the Physics Department at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), and Prof. Ambarish Kumar from IIT Bombay explored various aspects of the subject.

Prof. Singh, a distinguished theoretical physicist known for his significant contributions to soft matter physics, focused on the foundational principles of soft matter and biophysics.

Prof. Kumar addressed two distinct topics, including the microscopic scale in biology and the influence of the surrounding medium on the functioning of biological systems at this scale.

Objectives of refresher course 

Prof. Pankaj Mishra from the Department of Physics at IIT ISM, who is also the coordinator of the refresher course, explained that the programme is conducted under the Malviya Mission Teacher’s Training Programme at the Malviya Mission Teacher Training Centre.

He stated, “The course aims to enhance and update the knowledge and understanding of the faculty members about the latest research and foundational concepts of soft matter physics.” He further emphasized that the goal of the course is to connect classical concepts with the frontiers of contemporary research.

Prof. Mishra highlighted that the comprehensive curriculum is designed to enhance participants’ knowledge, foster research collaboration, and empower educators with the latest advancements in biophysics and soft matter.

Additionally, Prof. Mrinalini Pandey, coordinator of the Faculty Development Centre, provided details about various training programs being conducted at IIT ISM, including the faculty induction program, refresher programs, online refresher programs, and NEP orientation and sensitization programs.

Prof. Bobby Antony, head of the Department of Physics, expressed confidence that the course will significantly enhance the knowledge and skills of the participants, contributing to their professional development and research capabilities.
