IIT ISM Dhanbad faculties teach tribal students through 3-D techniques

Dhanbad, Nov 23: The faculty members and research scholars of IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad taught remote school students the clues for solving geometrical sums.

A team of the Department of Management Studies and Industrial Engineering today organized a workshop in tribal-dominated Middle School Rupam of remote East Tundi block, around 40 km from here and explained to the students about the different varieties of geometrical shapes including polygon, heptagon, pyramid, trapezium, rhombus, ellipse, sphere, cone and other.

The workshop was organized under a project named ‘Motivate School Students and Teachers concerning the Relevance of Science and Technology through Innovative Communication Techniques’.  The principal investigator of the project, Prof Rajni Singh, satisfied the curiosity of students in detail.

Other members of the team were Niladri Das, associate professor of the Department of Management Studies, Kalyani Kumari, project staff and Dipender and Md Shahnawaz. Three teachers of the school led by principal Gopal Chandra Mahto also assisted the IIT ISM team.

“This was the 21st workshop being organized under the series which began in August last year and we concentrated this time on the use of 3-D techniques as it offers visualization which is more penetrative and engaging and also allows learners to strengthen their analytical and critical thinking process,” said Prof Singh.

“Usage of 3-D techniques enables students to visually and tangibly experiment with a variety of Mathematical and Scientific concepts,” said Prof Niladri Das who was present during the workshop as an invited speaker.

Gopal Chandra Mahto, principal of the school said that the majority of students belong to the Scheduled Tribe. All of them became satisfied with complex theorems of geometry explained by IIT ISM faculty experts.

Tulsi Soren (18), a class VIII student of the school said that the 3-D models of geometrical shapes brought by the visitors from IIT (ISM) helped him to understand the calculation methods of perimeters and areas of different geometrical shapes.
