Jamshedpur, Nov 14: In a historic first for Jamshedpur, 12-year-old Harnish Kaur Saini from Gurdwara Gaurisankar Road, Jugsalai, became the first girl in the city to perform the revered ritual of changing the Nishan Sahib, the Sikh flag, at her local gurdwara. Harnish, the daughter of Gurjindar Singh, took on the significant responsibility in a ceremony marked by reverence, pride, and community support.
Significance of Nishan Sahib ritual in Sikhism
The Nishan Sahib, a triangular flag, holds profound importance in Sikhism, symbolizing the presence of a gurdwara and the guiding principles of the Sikh faith. The flagpole is typically placed at all Sikh religious sites as a beacon of equality, humility, and devotion.
“Nishan” is derived from Persian, translating to “flag” or “standard,” while “Sahib,” an Arabic term meaning “lord” or “master,” is used as an honorific, indicating respect.
The ritual of replacing the Nishan Sahib is a meticulous and spiritual practice, often undertaken by devoted members of the Sikh community.

A step forward for gender inclusivity in Sikh practices
Traditionally performed by male members, Harnish’s participation marks a step forward for gender inclusivity within Sikh practices in Jamshedpur. Observers at the ceremony noted how this milestone reflects the Sikh ethos of equality and service, aligning with the teachings of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism.
Harnish was guided through the ritual, beginning with removing the previous flag, respectfully cleaning the pole, and adorning it with a fresh, saffron-coloured Nishan Sahib. She executed the ritual with poise and dedication, embodying the values instilled by her faith and her family.
Community support and family pride
Her father, Gurjindar Singh, expressed immense pride in his daughter’s achievement, stating, “Harnish has set an example for all, reminding us that faith and devotion transcend gender. This is a proud moment not only for our family but for the entire Sikh community in Jamshedpur.”
The ceremony attracted a large gathering of community members, who showed their support and encouragement. Many attendees expressed how Harnish’s actions symbolize progress and inclusivity within the religious framework, and several elders shared their admiration for her courage and dedication at such a young age.

“Harnish’s historic achievement has been a source of inspiration for other young girls in the Sikh community, encouraging them to actively participate in religious practices. As the first girl in Jamshedpur to perform the Nishan Sahib ritual, she has paved the way for future generations, reinforcing the Sikh values of equality, service, and reverence,” said an official of Central Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee.
