Union Sports Minister discusses India’s 2036 Olympic bid with World Athletics President

New Delhi, Nov 25: Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya held a meeting on Monday in New Delhi with Sebastian Coe, the President of World Athletics and a member of the International Olympic Committee.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the meeting focused on several issues, including India’s ambition to host the 2036 Olympics and the advancement of athletics in the country, from grassroots development to achieving top-level performance.

Accompanying Sebastian were Jon Ridgeon, CEO of World Athletics, and Helen Delany, Director of International Relations and Development for World Athletics.

The Union Minister informed the World Athletics President about India’s Letter of Intent submitted to the International Olympic Committee to host the 2036 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Mandaviya highlighted India’s determination to host a sustainable, inclusive, and inspiring Olympic Games. He further mentioned that the country’s bid for the 2036 Olympics reflects widespread support from all sectors—government, industry, and society—aimed at presenting India’s cultural heritage and sporting potential to the world.

Mandaviya discussed India’s plans to build on the legacies of previous host cities, focusing on sustainability and celebrating diversity. He also emphasized India’s recognition of World Athletics’ vital role in shaping the global sports ecosystem and expressed a desire for deeper collaboration to promote athletic excellence, enabling more Indian athletes to reach the podium at the Olympics and other international events.

Additionally, Mandaviya shared details about the draft National Sports Policy, 2024, which aims to use sports for nation-building and economic development, along with fostering a pipeline for excellence from grassroots to global levels. He also mentioned the draft National Sports Governance Bill, designed to ensure transparency, good governance, and alignment with international best practices in sports organizations.
