THE JHARKHAND STORY DESK

New Delhi, Dec 2: The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Election Commission of India (ECI) to explain its decision to increase the number of voters per polling booth from 1,200 to 1,500.

The bench, comprising Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar, opted not to issue a formal notice to the Election Commission but instructed the poll panel to submit a brief affidavit.

The Supreme Court was hearing a PIL that challenged the Election Commission of India’s communications, which raised the maximum number of electors per polling station from 1,200 to 1,500.

Senior advocate Maninder Singh, representing the Election Commission of India, informed the bench that the number of electors per polling station was increased to 1,500 in 2019, and no objections had been raised until now. He also mentioned that political parties are consulted before finalizing the decision for each booth.
