Dhanbad, Dec 2: Dr M Velan, adjunct faculty professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing (IIITDM) Kancheepuram, today stressed the importance of effective environmental management to maintain ecological balance.
Speaking at the IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad, Dr Velan delivered a keynote lecture on “Balancing Environment Protection with Industry Sustainability.” He highlighted the adverse environmental impacts associated with the mining industry and emphasized the need for sustainable management practices.
Mission LiFE keynote lecture series
The lecture, organized by the EIACP Programme Centre (RP) under the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering at IIT ISM, Dhanbad, was part of the Mission LiFE keynote lecture series for 2024-25.
The series’ theme, “Integrative Approaches to Sustainable Development: Innovations, Challenges, and Solutions,” aligns with Dr. Velan’s areas of expertise. His research interests include green product design, sustainable manufacturing, carbon capture utilization and storage, artificial intelligence for sustainability, and life cycle assessment.

Reclamation and restoration strategies in mining
During his lecture, Dr Velan, who previously served as the advisor for environment, project, and business development at NLC India Limited, discussed successful reclamation and restoration strategies in the lignite mining sector.
He showcased initiatives that have successfully restored ecosystems to their original state or even enhanced them. These efforts highlight the potential for environmental recovery in mining areas when effective management practices are implemented.
Innovative approaches to sustainable development
Dr Velan also presented a field study on integrated farming systems that incorporate the circular economy’s principles, demonstrating innovative approaches to sustainable development.
The session provided valuable insights into the intersection of environmental protection and industrial sustainability, offering a deeper understanding of the challenges and solutions within the mining industry.
