Special CBI court convicts Abhijeet Infrastructure, its MD, ex-director in Jharkhand coal scam case

New Delhi, Dec 9: A special CBI court today convicted Manoj Kumar Jayaswal, Managing Director of Abhijeet Infrastructure Ltd, and Ramesh Kumar Jayaswal, the company’s former director, and the company itself in connection with a coal scam involving the allocation of Brinda, Sisai, and Meral coal blocks in Jharkhand.

In a case that was registered in 2016, the CBI accused the company of conspiring with public officials to fraudulently acquire the coal blocks by misrepresenting its financial status and submitting forged documents related to land acquisition, machinery procurement, and financial support for an end-use plant.

This fraudulent act led to the Union Ministry of Coal awarding the coal blocks to the company, inflicting considerable financial damage on the public exchequer.

The judge observed that Manoj Kumar Jayaswal was overseeing the company’s operations when falsified letters and documents were presented to the ministry.

Special Judge Arun Bhardwaj convicted Nagpur-based Abhijeet Infrastructure Pvt Ltd (AIPL), its MD, and former director on charges of cheating, criminal conspiracy, and presenting forged documents as genuine. The court will announce their sentence at a later date.

The CBI filed a charge sheet against the accused on October 29, 2020. During the trial, 38 witnesses testified and the prosecution presented 74 documents as evidence.
