Melbourne, Dec 26: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has taken significant action against Indian player Virat Kohli. He has been fined 20% of his match fee and has received one demerit point. Kohli was found guilty under Article 2.12 of the ICC’s Code of Conduct.

The incident took place on the first day of the Melbourne Test when Kohli made physical contact with Australia’s debutant Sam Konstas by bumping his shoulder after the 10th over, resulting in a tense confrontation between the two players.

Fortunately, Virat Kohli has avoided suspension. The ICC announced its decision on the first day of the Test match, although typically, action is taken after the conclusion of the match.

Kohli agreed to the sanction recommended by Match Referee Andy Pycroft, avoiding the need for a formal hearing. The charge was brought forward by on-field umpires Joel Wilson and Michael Gough, along with third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Shawn Craig.

Meanwhile, Konstas played down the altercation during the post-match press conference.

“I was just doing my gloves, and I think he accidentally bumped me. I think that is just cricket, just the tension. For me, it’s about having that freedom, backing myself, and trying to bring out the best version of me. I was lucky enough to get a few runs today,” Konstas stated.
