National Conference on Atomic and Molecular Physics begins at IIT ISM Dhanbad

Dhanbad, Jan 9: The 24th National Conference on Atomic and Molecular Physics (NCAMP 2025) has commenced at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad.

Organized by the Indian Society of Atomic and Molecular Physics (ISAMP) in collaboration with the Department of Physics at IIT (ISM), the four-day event is hosting over 200 delegates from more than 100 institutes, both from India and abroad.

The conference was inaugurated by Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Director of IIT (ISM), with Bhas Bhapat from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune, serving as the guest of honor.

Purpose and Focus of the Conference

The event aims to foster scientific interaction and knowledge-sharing among students, early-career researchers, and established scientists in the atomic, molecular, and optical physics community.

The conference provides a platform for participants to present their research and stay updated on the latest theoretical and experimental advancements.

Prof. Mishra’s Address

While addressing the attendees, Prof. Mishra emphasized the need for synchronization between science, technology, and policy for achieving meaningful outcomes. “Fundamental ideation begins with basic science, matures into technology and ultimately transforms ideas into products, driving economic growth when integrated into policy,” he said.

Bhas Bhapat on Spectroscopy and Quantum Technologies

Bhas Bhapat highlighted the significant progress in spectroscopy and collisions, which have now expanded into various fields, including quantum technologies.

“It’s fitting that we celebrate the Golden Jubilee of ISAMP alongside 100 years of quantum theory, which traces its roots to observations in atomic physics,” he remarked.

Scientific Program and Golden Jubilee Celebrations

Prof. Bobby Antony, Head of the Department of Physics at IIT (ISM), provided an outline of the scientific program for NCAMP 2025. The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Prof. P.M. Sarun.

NCAMP 2025 also marks the Golden Jubilee of the Indian Society of Atomic and Molecular Physics, which was established in 1976. A special session will be held this afternoon to commemorate this milestone, along with an election to form the society’s new committee.
