THE JHARKHAND STORY DESK

New Delhi, Jan 20: The Supreme Court today stayed the trial court case proceedings against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who is accused of making derogatory remarks about Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The court issued notices to both the Jharkhand government and Naveen Jha, a BJP worker who filed the defamation suit. The parties involved have been asked to respond within four weeks.

The bench, consisting of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, scheduled a hearing in six weeks to review Gandhi’s appeal challenging the Jharkhand High Court’s decision, which had rejected his appeal to quash the defamation case.

Gandhi’s comments, made during a public speech on March 18, 2018, allegedly referred to Shah as a “murderer” while targeting the BJP.

Jha has accused Gandhi of making objectionable remarks against Amit Shah, leading to the defamation suit.

The Supreme Court’s stay means all trial proceedings will remain suspended until further orders are issued.
