Heavy rush of pilgrims for Mahakumbh leads to many missing trains in Daltonganj

THE JHARKHAND STORY NETWORK

Daltonganj, Jan 27: The unprecedented rush of pilgrims travelling to the Mahakumbh Mela has caused overcrowding on Delhi-bound trains that stop at Prayagraj railway station. Daltonganj railway station is now frequently witnessing these incidents.

Last night, around 50 passengers were unable to board the Tata Jammu Tawi Express at Daltonganj railway station.

A massive crowd of pilgrims, all headed to the Mahakumbh Mela, gathered at the station, but many missed the train due to confusion and overcrowding.

This long-distance train has only a two-minute stoppage at Daltonganj railway station.

The issue is compounded by the tendency of passengers travelling in groups—often from the same village, ward, or neighbourhood (mohalla)—to insist on boarding the same coach or bogie. This creates chaos, especially when their luggage obstructs entry.

Although the train’s interconnected coaches allow passengers to move from one coach to another, even at full speed, most passengers refuse to spread out. Instead, they concentrate on one coach of their choice, creating congestion and delays.

Station Superintendent advises a more systematic approach to boarding trains

Daltonganj Railway Station Superintendent Umesh Kumar noted that passengers often create unnecessary difficulties for themselves. He advised a more systematic approach to boarding the train, which could save them from many hardships.

Kumar also highlighted that most pilgrims carry excessive luggage, often heavy. He appealed to travellers to pack lighter for smoother journeys.

He confirmed that similar incidents occur almost daily and reiterated the importance of prioritizing boarding first. Passengers, he suggested, should focus on securing their entry into the train and then settle into their seats or positions as the journey progresses.

“Last night, around 50 passengers couldn’t board the train due to such issues,” he said.
