Melbourne, Feb 6: Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has announced his surprise retirement from One Day Internationals, effective immediately.
His decision comes just days after being named in Australia’s squad for the Champions Trophy, adding to the team’s selection challenges as they already grapple with injuries to key players.
Despite stepping away from ODIs, the 35-year-old will remain available for T20 Internationals. His unexpected retirement may have been influenced by a hamstring injury sustained while playing for Durban Super Giant in the ongoing SA20 tournament.

With the Champions Trophy set to take place in Pakistan and Dubai from February 19, Australia has until February 12 to finalize its squad, now requiring a replacement for Stoinis.
“Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for every moment I’ve had in the green and gold. Representing my country at the highest level is something I’ll always cherish,” said Stoinis in a media release issued by Cricket Australia.
“This wasn’t an easy decision, but I believe it’s the right time for me to step away from ODIs and fully focus on the next chapter of my career. I’ve got a fantastic relationship with Ron (head coach Andrew McDonald) and I’ve hugely appreciated his support. I’ll be cheering the boys on in Pakistan,” he added.
