IIT ISM Dhanbad gets 3rd position in national Hackathon

Dhanbad, Feb 10: The IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad team from the Department of Applied Geophysics secured third place in the Hackathon on Innovative Mineral Hunt Techniques for Mineral Prognostication, organized by the Geological Survey of India (GSI) in Bhubaneswar.

The team—comprising Litan Dutta, Dinesh Munda, Tanmay Singh, and Dr. G. S. Rao—was led by Dr. Partha Pratim Mandal. Their innovative approach and dedication to advancing new techniques in mineral exploration earned them national recognition.

Honored at CGPB Meeting in Bhubaneswar

The award was presented during the 64th Central Geological Programming Board (CGPB) meeting held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The team’s contribution was highly appreciated as a reflection of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad’s continued commitment to cutting-edge research in mineral exploration and geological sciences.

The ceremony was attended by key dignitaries, including V. L. Kantha Rao (Secretary, Ministry of Mines and Chairman, CGPB), Asit Saha (Director General, GSI), Sanjay Lohiya (Additional Secretary, Ministry of Mines), Dr. Joyesh Bagchi (Additional Director General, GSI), and Deb Kumar Bhattacharya (Deputy Director General, GSI). Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Director of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, was a special invitee at the meeting.

Ministry of Mines Secretary presents award

During the award presentation, V. L. Kantha Rao, Secretary, Ministry of Mines, handed over the award to the IIT (ISM) team and commended their innovative solutions in mineral exploration using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques. He also highlighted the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration and future advancements in the field.

Team members Litan Dutta, Dinesh Munda, and Dr. Partha Pratim Mandal attended the award ceremony, where they had the prestigious opportunity to present their solution to leading experts in geological sciences.
