Jamshedpur, Feb 16: An elderly couple riding home on a two-wheeler was fatally struck by a speeding dumper on Station Road, under the jurisdiction of Bagbera police station, on Friday night.
The accident occurred around 8:00 PM, during a no-entry period for heavy vehicles.
Public Outrage and Road Blockade
After the incident, angry residents protested and blocked the road at the accident site. The police initially tried to pacify the demonstrators but later resorted to a mild lathi charge to disperse the agitated crowd.

Protesters questioned how the police, who strictly enforce helmet and vehicle document checks throughout the city, failed to stop a dumper violating the no-entry rule.
Police Statement on the Incident
Speaking to The Jharkhand Story, Senior SP Kishore Kaushal stated,
“Violating the no-entry period is a minor offense, but the accident caused by the dumper, leading to the deaths of two innocent people, is a very serious crime. We are investigating how the dumper driver managed to evade the restriction.”
Victims Identified
The deceased were identified as Debashis Chakravarti and his wife, Nupur Chakravarti, residents of Pramoth Nagar in Parsudih.
The couple was returning home from Jugsalai via Station Road when, near the Mahua Galli junction, the speeding dumper struck their two-wheeler from behind.
Despite Helmets, No Survivors
Though both victims were wearing helmets, they died on the spot due to the impact.
Dumper Driver Caught After Attempted Escape
The dumper driver tried to flee, abandoning the vehicle a short distance away. However, bystanders chased and caught him. He is now in police custody.
The dumper, reportedly linked to a Gamharia-based industrial unit, has been seized.
Family Tragedy Strikes Again
Debashis Chakravarti (62) was a retired Tata Steel employee and is survived by his only teenage daughter, Nisha Chakravarti.
At the time of the accident, Nisha was alone at home, waiting for her parents to return from shopping in Jugsalai market.
Tragically, this was not the first road accident for the family. Ten years ago, the couple was involved in another crash in Golmuri, which claimed the life of their young son, Rishabh Chakravarti.
