On Monday, senior advocate Kapil Sibal sought urgent listing of the matter through oral mentioning before a bench headed by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna. However, the CJI declined oral mentioning and emphasized the need to follow the established procedure of submitting a letter of urgency via email.

When Sibal informed the bench that a letter had already been sent, the Chief Justice assured that he would review the request in the afternoon and take appropriate action.

“Why are you mentioning when we have a system in place? Send a letter of urgency and that will be placed before me. I will do the needful. All these requests are placed before me every afternoon,” remarked CJI Khanna.

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which was passed by Parliament after intense debates, received presidential assent from Droupadi Murmu on April 5.
