Ranchi, April 8: In a firm move to address the worsening education crisis in Jharkhand, the High Court has issued strict orders regarding the massive shortage of school teachers across the state. The Court has directed the Chairman of the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) to provide a clear timeline for the recruitment of 26,000 school teachers—an appointment process that has been delayed for years.

Teacher Shortage Raised in Public Interest Case

The hearing is part of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed last year, which brought attention to the severe lack of teachers in government schools. According to the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE), Jharkhand tops the national list for teacher shortages. Shockingly, more than 30% of government primary schools operate with only one teacher.

Right to Education Act Being Ignored

The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, mandates at least two teachers per school and one teacher for every 30 students. However, most primary and upper primary schools in Jharkhand fail to meet these basic standards. The crisis has deepened, especially since the state has not recruited new teachers since 2016.

Government Responds, But Timeline Missing

In its affidavit submitted on April 2, 2025, the Jharkhand government acknowledged the shortage and promised a “fair, transparent, and timely” appointment of 26,000 teachers. However, it failed to provide any specific timeline for when the recruitment would begin or end.

60,000 More Teachers Still Needed

Even with the proposed recruitment, the state’s education system faces a long road to recovery. UDISE data reveals that over 60,000 additional teachers are required at the primary level alone to fully comply with the Right to Education Act. The High Court is expected to press for clearer answers in the next hearing, scheduled for April 16.
