New Delhi, April 10: Cricket is set to make a historic return to the Olympics after 128 years, with six teams competing for glory at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

Confirmed by the organisers on Wednesday, the sport will be contested in the T20 format for both men’s and women’s events, each featuring six teams and allowing 15-player squads, with 90 athlete quotas allocated per gender.

The United States, as the host nation, is expected to secure an automatic berth, leaving only five spots open for other teams to qualify. However, the detailed qualification pathway for cricket’s Olympic comeback is yet to be finalised.

Cricket last appeared at the Olympics in 1900 in Paris, when Great Britain and France played a single two-day match, now considered an unofficial Test.

The game’s inclusion for LA28 was approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2023, alongside four other sports: baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse (sixes), and squash.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) currently has 12 full members: Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, the West Indies, and Zimbabwe. An additional 94 countries are part of its associate membership.
