Mamata Banerjee declares Rs 10 lakh aid for kin of deceased in Murshidabad violence

Kolkata, April 16: In the aftermath of violent protests over the Waqf (Amendment) Act in Murshidabad, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced a compensation package for the victims.

The unrest, which erupted on April 11, led to the deaths of three people, injuries to many, and widespread damage to homes and shops.

In response, the Chief Minister declared that families of the deceased will receive ₹10 lakh each.

“We do not differentiate between people on the basis of religion, we understand their pain,” Mamata said while addressing an event at Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata.

She added that those who lost homes will be rehabilitated under the state-funded Banglar Bari scheme, and compensation for damaged shops will be determined after an official estimate is prepared.

Banerjee also directed the Chief Secretary to submit a detailed report on the incident and oversee the relief efforts.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Police have intensified their crackdown on those involved in the violence, arresting 150 individuals so far. Additional police forces have been deployed in Samserganj, Dhuliyan, and other areas of Murshidabad to prevent further escalation.
