PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, May 1: The Ranchi Meteorological Centre has issued a comprehensive alert for severe weather conditions expected to affect large parts of the state from May 1 to May 4.

A combination of upper atmospheric disturbances is set to trigger widespread thunderstorms, frequent lightning, and gusty winds, with varying intensity across different regions.

Forecast Overview

May 1: The central and southern regions of the state are likely to witness strong winds reaching 50–60 Kmph, accompanied by heavy thunderstorms and lightning. In contrast, the northern and northeastern areas may experience slightly lower wind speeds ranging between 40–50 kmph, though thunderstorm activity is still expected to be significant.

May 2 & 3: Severe weather is forecast to continue across most parts of the state. While widespread thunderstorm activity will persist, the north-western region may see some relief on May 3, with reduced likelihood of storm development.

May 4: The weather is expected to gradually ease, but isolated areas—mainly in the central and southern zones—may still experience thunderstorms. Northern parts of the state are expected to remain largely unaffected by this time.

Meteorological Factors

This intense spell of weather is being driven by two primary upper atmospheric systems:

  1. An upper air cyclonic circulation located over north Bangladesh and adjoining areas, extending vertically between 1.5 Km and 5.8 Km above mean sea level.
  2. A trough in the mid to upper westerlies, aligned along longitude 85°E and north of latitude 21°N, situated at an altitude of 7.6 to 9.4 Km.

These systems are working in tandem to create highly unstable atmospheric conditions, leading to convective activity and the formation of severe thunderstorms.

Residents across the state are urged to stay indoors during thunderstorms and avoid open areas. Refrain from using electrical appliances during lightning. Secure loose outdoor objects to prevent wind-related damage.
