Thiruvananthapuram, May 2: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated the Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport in Thiruvananthapuram, hailing it as a transformative symbol of “new age development” for Kerala and the entire country.

Developed through a public-private partnership by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), the Vizhinjam port is India’s first deep-water transhipment hub and represents a major stride in the nation’s maritime infrastructure.

Constructed at a cost of ₹8,900 crore, the port is being developed under a landlord model on a design, build, finance, operate and transfer (DBFOT) basis. Adani Vizhinjam Port Private Limited, the concessionaire, began construction on December 5, 2015.

Strategically positioned just 10 nautical miles from the key international shipping lanes connecting Europe, the Persian Gulf, and the Far East, Vizhinjam is expected to drastically reduce India’s reliance on foreign ports for transshipment.

During the inauguration, which was also attended by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, Modi highlighted the port’s unique advantage—its deep sea access on one side and vast development opportunities on the other, which he described as the essence of natural beauty and progress.
