The Personnel Ministry confirmed the extension through an official order released on Wednesday.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet cleared the extension, keeping him at the helm of the Central Bureau of Investigation until May 2025.

The decision follows a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this week, with Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna also participating as part of the statutory selection panel. Despite deliberations, no agreement emerged on who should take over after Sood’s term ends on May 24.

Sood, a 1986-batch IPS officer from the Karnataka cadre and former DGP of the state, was appointed as CBI director in May 2023, replacing Subodh Jaiswal. His initial tenure was for two years.
