India records over 106 lakh tonne rise in foodgrain output

New Delhi, May 19: India is steadily moving towards its goal of becoming the world’s food basket, with a significant increase in foodgrain production for the financial year 2024–25.

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced on Monday that foodgrain output has reached 1,663.91 lakh tonnes—an increase of over 106 lakh tonnes compared to the previous year.

Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, the minister highlighted the consistent upward trend in agricultural output, stating, “Our foodgrain production is rising steadily… but we aim higher. We want to meet domestic demand and extend support to many other countries.”

In the 2023–24 fiscal year, total foodgrain production stood at 1,557.6 lakh tonnes. The Rabi season alone saw an increase from 1,600.06 lakh tonnes last year to 1,645.27 lakh tonnes in 2024–25.

The Union Minister said the ministry aspires to establish India as the food basket of the world.

Chouhan reaffirmed his ministry’s commitment to enhancing agricultural productivity and global food security, expressing confidence in India’s potential to lead the world in foodgrain supply.
