New Delhi, June 10: In a move that has stunned the cricketing world, West Indies batter Nicholas Pooran announced his retirement from international cricket at just 29, describing the decision as “difficult” but necessary after long reflection.

Pooran’s announcement comes mere days after he withdrew himself from selection for West Indies’ ongoing white-ball series in England.

The news delivers a major blow to West Indies’ hopes ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup, set to be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Pooran was seen as a key figure in the side, especially after his recent form in franchise cricket. His dynamic displays in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season for Lucknow Super Giants once again showcased his explosive batting talent.

“To the cricket public, after much thought and reflection, I’ve decided to announce my retirement from international cricket. This game we love has given and will continue to give so much – joy, purpose, unforgettable memories, and a chance to represent the people of the West Indies,” Pooran said in a social media post.

Debuting internationally in 2016, Pooran built an impressive career across formats. He featured in 106 T20 Internationals, scoring 2,275 runs at an average of 26.14 with a strike rate of 136.39. In One-Day Internationals, he amassed 1,983 runs across 61 matches, averaging 39.66 with a strike rate of 99.15 — a record that includes three centuries and 11 fifties.

His decision to step away marks the end of an era for West Indies cricket, as the 2016 T20 World Cup champions now look to rebuild without one of their most dynamic hitters.
