India to conduct population, caste census in 2027

THE JHARKHAND STORY DESK

New Delhi, June 16: Marking a significant move, the Central government has officially notified that India’s next census, which will include caste-based data, will be conducted in 2027—16 years after the last enumeration in 2011.

The Union Home Ministry issued a gazette notification on Monday, confirming that the 16th national census will begin with March 1, 2027, as the official reference date across most of the country. However, in snow-bound and non-synchronous areas, including the Union Territory of Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, the reference date has been set for October 1, 2026.

The nationwide data-gathering exercise will involve an extensive workforce of approximately 34 lakh enumerators and supervisors, supported by 1.3 lakh census officers equipped with digital tools to conduct the process efficiently.

According to the notification, this massive effort aims to collect updated population and caste-related information that will inform future planning and policy-making at both state and national levels.
