Ranchi, June 24: Medinirai Medical College Hospital (MMCH) in Palamu is under fire after a video surfaced online showing its principal, Dr P.N. Mahto, allegedly threatening MBBS students during a heated confrontation. Following the incident, two students from the 2023 batch were suspended for one month on disciplinary grounds, sparking backlash from the student community and medical associations across the state.

Suspended Students Ordered to Stay in Hostel, Not Attend Classes

A notice issued by the MMCH administration confirmed the disciplinary action, stating the students are barred from attending classes during the suspension period but must remain in the college hostel. The decision was based on a recommendation from the institution’s disciplinary committee.

Dispute Sparked by Girl Student Being Denied Entry Without ID

The incident occurred around 7 pm on Monday when college guards stopped a female MBBS student from entering the campus without an identity card. Her fellow students objected to the restriction, prompting Principal Mahto to intervene. A verbal altercation ensued, during which the principal was allegedly recorded threatening the students, saying, “Career barbaad kar denge” (“We will ruin your career”).

The video, lasting just under a minute, quickly went viral on social media and has since drawn condemnation from various quarters.

Doctors’ Body Warns of Statewide Agitation

Reacting to the suspension and the contents of the video, the Junior Doctors Association (JDA) of RIMS, Ranchi, issued a sharp rebuke. President Dr Ankit Kumar called the action “arbitrary and unfortunate,” and warned that the medical fraternity would not remain silent. “We will not leave the students in the lurch. If the principal does not correct his mistake, we will launch a statewide agitation,” he said.

Student Delegation Appeals to Deputy Commissioner

In protest, a delegation of MMCH students met with the Deputy Commissioner of Palamu to demand revocation of the suspension and an inquiry into the principal’s conduct. They accused the administration of acting unfairly and misusing its authority.
