New Delhi, June 25: Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla created history on Wednesday by becoming the first Indian to journey to the c, marking a major milestone in the nation’s space legacy since Rakesh Sharma’s orbital mission in 1984.

His voyage comes exactly 41 years after Sharma spent eight days aboard the Soviet Union’s Salyut-7 space station.

Shukla is part of the Axiom-4 crew, a four-member international team that includes former NASA astronaut and mission commander Peggy Whitson, Poland’s Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski, and Hungary’s Tibor Kapu.

The mission, launched by Axiom Space, marks the return of human spaceflight representation for India, Poland, and Hungary.

The Axiom-4 mission lifted off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 12:01 p.m. IST, drawing applause from audiences around the world.

According to NASA, the crew is expected to dock with the ISS around 4:30 p.m. IST on Thursday, June 26. The Axiom-4 mission had faced multiple delays before achieving this historic liftoff.
