Pune, July 4: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday unveiled an equestrian statue of Peshwa Bajirao I at the Trishakti Gate of the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Khadakwasla.
The 13.5-foot-tall, 4,000-kilogram bronze statue was donated to NDA by the Peshwa Bajirao Pratishthan. During the ceremony, Amit Shah said that the NDA in Khadakwasla is the most fitting place to honour Peshwa Bajirao’s legacy.

He noted that installing the statue at the location where cadets from all three wings of the armed forces undergo initial training would serve as an inspiration for future soldiers, motivating them to protect the nation’s borders with courage drawn from Bajirao’s life.
Amit Shah further said that had the freedom struggle initiated by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and carried forward for a hundred years by the Peshwas not taken place, the foundational identity of India would not have existed.

He praised Bajirao’s extraordinary achievements, saying that the Peshwa created an immortal legacy in his short life of 40 years—something unparalleled in history. The event was also attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, among others.
