Ranchi, July 12: The Jharkhand Biodiversity Board (JBB) has launched a month-long awareness campaign in Ranchi to promote the conservation of local biodiversity, eliminate plastic use, and build awareness around a drug-free lifestyle.

The campaign was officially inaugurated by Sanjeev Kumar, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) and Member Secretary of JBB.

As part of the campaign, free saplings of native plant species are being distributed to rural Panchayat Bhawans, Sarna Sthals, and schools. In addition, medicinal gardens are being developed within school premises to promote the use of traditional, eco-friendly practices.

Focus on Environmental Awareness and De-Addiction

The initiative also includes pledges taken by participants to work toward a plastic-free environment and a drug-free Jharkhand. Through a series of educational sessions, the campaign aims to engage citizens in sustainable practices and responsible living.

Technical officers Hari Shankar Lal, Pallawi Bharati, and Manisha Shankar are conducting sessions to educate participants on the Biodiversity Act, identification of native species, planting techniques, soil nutrients, and the benefits of various plant types. These efforts are helping rural communities understand the ecological and social significance of biodiversity.

Addressing Global and Local Environmental Challenges

The campaign highlights the detrimental effects of plastic on biodiversity and the urgency of eliminating plastic waste. It also connects local actions to global environmental challenges and encourages collective responsibility. Under the drug-free Jharkhand initiative, the social and health impacts of substance abuse are also being addressed.

A special emphasis is being placed on the significance of Tribal Pride Year, aligning the campaign with cultural identity and environmental stewardship. The Member Secretary’s leadership in initiating such inclusive and grassroots efforts has received strong appreciation and support from communities.

Community Participation and Tree Plantation Drive

Local residents, Panchayat members, school teachers, and members of Biodiversity Management Committees are actively participating in the campaign. Community members like Manish Kumar, Sunil Kumar, Dhirendra Kumar, Moni Kumari, Pallavi Bharti, Sanju Devi, Rakaibul Ansari, and Amarnath are leading the plantation drives.

So far, over 1,000 trees have been planted across ten Panchayats including Nagari-Bahu, Namkum, and Lalgutwa. The campaign continues to gain momentum as more communities join the effort to restore biodiversity and promote sustainable development in the state.
