New Delhi, July 21: A total of 145 Lok Sabha MPs from across party lines submitted a memorandum to Speaker Om Birla today seeking the removal of High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma.

The demand follows a judicial committee’s indictment of Justice Varma over the alleged recovery of burnt and half-burnt Rs 500 currency notes from his official residence in Delhi on March 15, 2025.

The committee, comprising three High Court judges and appointed by the then Chief Justice of India Sanjeev Khanna, had recommended Justice Varma’s removal after he declined to step down.

Their findings were forwarded to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for further action. In response, Justice Varma challenged the committee’s report in the Supreme Court.

The impeachment motion, filed under Articles 124, 217, and 218 of the Constitution, garnered support from a wide spectrum of parties including Congress, TDP, JDU, JDS, Jan Sena, AGP, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), LJSP, SKP, CPM, and others.

Senior leaders and MPs such as Anurag Singh Thakur, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Rahul Gandhi, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, PP Chaudhary, Supriya Sule, and KC Venugopal were among the signatories.

Congress MP K Suresh, a key mover of the initiative, confirmed that his party had contributed 40 signatures and coordinated with INDIA bloc allies to reach the required count.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju had earlier revealed that over 100 MPs had already endorsed the removal notice.

With Parliament now set to examine the allegations formally, the case against Justice Varma marks one of the most high-profile impeachment attempts in recent years.
