New Delhi, August 4: Veteran political leader and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) founder Shibu Soren passed away today at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi. He was 81 years old and had been undergoing treatment for age-related health issues.

A Life Dedicated to Jharkhand and Tribal Rights

Shibu Soren, fondly known as “Guruji,” was a towering figure in Jharkhand politics. He played a central role in the creation of Jharkhand as a separate state and championed the rights of tribal and marginalised communities for decades.

Born on January 11, 1944, in Nemra village of Jharkhand’s Ramgarh district, Soren began his political journey by fighting for the rights of tribal communities and land ownership. In the 1970s, he founded the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), which led the movement for a separate Jharkhand state — a dream that became reality in 2000.

He served as Jharkhand’s Chief Minister three times — in 2005, 2008, and 2009 — and was also the Union Minister for Coal. His political legacy is rooted in grassroots activism, social justice, and tribal empowerment.

Hemant Soren: “Aaj Main Shunya Ho Gaya Hoon”

Following the demise of his father, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren shared a heartfelt tribute on X (formerly Twitter), writing:
“With a heavy heart, I share that my father, Shibu Soren ji, is no more. He was not just a father to me but a guiding light for millions in Jharkhand. His life was dedicated to the struggles and dreams of the tribal people. We will continue to walk the path he showed us.”

In a deeply emotional line, he added: “Aaj main shunya ho gaya hoon.” (Today, I have become empty.)

The message captured the profound personal loss and the void left in Jharkhand’s political and cultural landscape.

Tributes Pour In Across Political Lines

Leaders from across the country have expressed their condolences, calling Shibu Soren a true son of the soil and a relentless voice for tribal rights. Many credited him with reshaping the identity and political future of Jharkhand.

Three-day state mourning

Meanwhile, the Jharkhand government has declared a three-day state mourning following the demise of Dishom Guru Shibu Soren.

During this period, no official programs will be organized. The national flag will remain at half-mast throughout the mourning period.

Additionally, government offices will remain closed on August 4 and 5.
