Patna, August 5: The Bihar government has approved a new domicile-based policy for school teacher recruitment, reserving a major share of posts for state residents.

Under the decision cleared in Tuesday’s cabinet meeting, 85% of teaching positions will now effectively go to candidates considered ‘native residents’ of Bihar.

Additional Chief Secretary (Cabinet Secretariat) S. Siddharth explained that the quota system already ensures over 50% of seats for state residents through existing reservations—nearly half the positions are reserved for SCs, STs, OBCs, and Extremely Backward Classes, with an additional 10% earmarked for the economically weaker sections.

He added that 35% of the positions are set aside for women, and the government has decided that this category will also be filled exclusively by state residents. From the remaining posts, 40% will be allocated to candidates who completed both Class 10 and Class 12 within Bihar. With this additional provision, the share of positions reserved for native residents will rise to well over 85%.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who announced the move on Monday, said the step is aimed at prioritizing local candidates in school teacher recruitment exams.
