Jamshedpur, Aug 9: The monsoon over Jharkhand is expected to remain active in the coming days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across several parts of the state.

Rain and Thunderstorms in the Short Term

On August 9 and 10, isolated locations may experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 km/h.

On August 11, heavy rainfall is likely in pockets of the west-central, adjoining north-western, and southern districts. Thunderstorms and gusty winds are also expected in some isolated areas.

Weather Systems at Play

Meteorological analysis shows that the monsoon trough at mean sea level currently extends through Ferozpur, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Kheri, Patna, Bankura, Digha, and further east-southeastwards into the northeast Bay of Bengal.

An upper-air cyclonic circulation over Bangladesh, the West Bengal coasts, and the adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal — extending between 3.1 and 5.8 km above mean sea level — persists, tilting southwestwards with height.

A trough from northeast Uttar Pradesh to south Bangladesh, passing through Bihar, Jharkhand, and northern Gangetic West Bengal, continues to influence weather conditions in the region.

Low-Pressure System Expected

A low-pressure area is also likely to form over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal around August 13, which could bring further rainfall activity.

Recent Rainfall Data

In the past 24 hours, light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms was recorded in most places, while isolated heavy showers occurred in some parts. The highest rainfall — 115.2 mm — was recorded at Barkisuriya in Giridih district.

Precautionary Advice

The weather office has urged residents, particularly in vulnerable areas, to remain vigilant against lightning strikes and waterlogging.
