THE JHARKHAND STORY DESK

New Delhi, August 27: Ravichandran Ashwin, one of the most successful bowlers in IPL history, has brought the curtain down on his league career. The veteran off-spinner, who claimed 187 wickets in 220 matches at an economy of 7.20, is the fifth-highest wicket-taker in the tournament.

Over the years, he represented several franchises including Rising Pune Supergiant, Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals, and most recently Chennai Super Kings, with whom he reunited in 2025.

Bought by CSK for ₹9.75 crore at the mega auction earlier this year, Ashwin featured in nine matches this season, collecting seven wickets while conceding runs at 9.13 per over—his most expensive season in terms of economy, crossing the 8.49 mark for the first time.

Announcing his decision on X, Ashwin reflected on the journey with gratitude. “Special day and hence a special beginning. They say every ending will have a new start. My time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today. Would like to thank all the franchisees for all the wonderful memories and relationships over the years, and most importantly, the @IPL and the @BCCI for what they have given me until now. Look forward to enjoying and making the most of what’s ahead of me,” he wrote.

The announcement comes a year after he stepped away from Test cricket in the middle of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, marking another turning point in his illustrious career.
