THE JHARKHAND STORY DESK

Shillong, Sept 6: A 790-page chargesheet has been filed by Meghalaya Police in the Sohra Sub-Division Court at Shillong today in connection with the murder of Indore resident Raja Raghuvanshi, who was found dead in a gorge near Wei Sawdong, Sohra, on June 2, 2025.

The newlywed had travelled to Meghalaya on a honeymoon with his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, who later resurfaced near a roadside eatery on the Varanasi–Ghazipur highway after being missing for several days.

Police have named five individuals—Sonam Raghuvanshi, Raj Kushwaha, Vishal Singh Chauhan, Ashish Singh Rajput, and Aanand Kurmi—as prime accused in the case, with police filing substantial material evidence and supporting documents in court. They have been booked under sections 103(1), 238(a), and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

According to the police, the couple disappeared from Sohra on May 26, prompting extensive search operations involving Sohra Police, SOT, NDRF, SDRF, trekking groups, and local villagers.

The case was registered at Sohra Police Station under BNS provisions after Raja’s body was recovered from a deep gorge at Arliang Riat Kunongrim, Umblai.

While Raja was confirmed dead, Sonam was later located alive near a roadside dhaba along the Varanasi–Ghazipur highway after having gone missing for weeks.

According to investigators, the sequence of events surrounding the couple’s disappearance, the discovery of Raja’s body, and Sonam’s sudden reappearance raised suspicions that led to the filing of the murder case. The voluminous chargesheet marks a major step forward in what has become one of Meghalaya’s most closely watched criminal investigations.
