Ladakh, Sept 26: Ladakh police have arrested climate activist Sonam Wangchuk after violent protests erupted in Leh on September 24, resulting in the deaths of four people and injuries to at least 80 others.

The arrest was carried out by a police team led by DGP S. D. Singh Jamwal, officials confirmed.

The demonstration, part of Wangchuk’s campaign for statehood for Ladakh and the inclusion of the Union Territory under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, escalated into clashes, arson, and widespread unrest.

Protesters reportedly targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office in Leh during the unrest.

In response to the violence, authorities have continued to enforce prohibitions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, as of September 26, banning gatherings of five or more people in the district to maintain law and order.
